The process of implant-supported dentures involves the careful review of your medical and dental history by our dentist. At an initial exam, x-rays are taken and impressions of your teeth and gums are created. In some cases, the dentist may order computed tomography (CT) scan of your mouth to see how much bone is available and where to best place the dental implants. It also shows where sinuses (in the upper jaw) and nerves are located so that they won’t interfere with the placement of an implant.
The placement of dental-supported denture requires two surgeries. The first surgery will involve placing the implants in the jawbone. After the first surgery, the dentist will wait for 4-6 months to allow the jaw bone and implant to attach and fuse. The second surgery exposes the top of the implants and a healing cap is placed on the head of each implant. After two weeks, the impression of the implant and jaw is taken to make the denture framework and teeth.
In the next phase of the process, the metal bar is placed and the teeth will be temporarily placed in the framework in the wax to see that everything fits properly. If everything works well, the teeth are secured in the denture framework permanently. The time frame to complete the implant depends on many factors.
